Daniel 2:20-21 - The Verses Project

Bible Daniel 2:20-21

Posted January 05, 2015

"Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,
to whom belong wisdom and might.
He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings;
he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding;”

These were the words of praise uttered by Daniel after the God of Israel answered a prayer that no earthly man could have answered for him… God revealed to Daniel the mystery of King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. This declaration of praise and blessing was directed at the God who put on display His infinite wisdom and might in answering Daniel’s request. God is not just wise, and not just powerful, but both wise and powerful! Note that these attributes aren’t occasionally seen in God, but rather they belong to Him… They’re in His possession; they are intrinsic to His nature. They’re not simply displayed partially or imperfectly, but rather fully and beautifully. While humans can show glimpses of wisdom and strength, they do so fallibly and never perfectly like God.

Daniel then proceeds to work out the implications of a God who’s eternally wise and mighty: in God’s control are times and seasons; a leader’s rise or fall is in God’s sovereign hand. He is never at the mercy of any man, but rather man is forever at the mercy of God! Not only is He wise, but from His wisdom He gives wisdom. He is not a God who hoards His wisdom, but rather One who shares of His overflow. Should you lack wisdom, and you do, seek out the One to whom belongs all wisdom and so kindly shares it.

This prayer of praise is particularly appropriate as we look out this new year and consider its possibilities. May we recognize that all that 2015 holds is found in the hands of an infinitely wise and powerful God, and may we bless His name forever because of it!
