Romans 8:38-39 - The Verses Project

Bible Romans 8:38-39

Posted April 11, 2015

[38] For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, [39] nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Can anything or anyone come in between or pry us from His love? These were the questions Paul asked a couple verses earlier in verse 35. Here in verse 38, Paul continues to clearly and boldly answer those questions.

“For I Am Sure…”

Paul starts his declaration by saying, “For I am sure…” This is not Paul crossing his fingers behind his back hoping what he believes is true. He is utterly convinced of God’s overcoming and conquering love. This is a love that Paul is banking everything on that cannot be threatened or overpowered or muted. Of this he is sure!

A Love That Can’t Be Severed

He proceeds with a list of things that could be seen as blocks and barricades coming between us and God's love, but quickly dismisses them all. None stand a chance against the love of God in Christ Jesus! Tim Keller said it this way: “Nothing in human experience (“neither death nor life,” v 38); in the spiritual realm (“neither angels nor demons”); in time (“neither the present nor the future”); in anything that opposes God’s people (“any powers”); in space (“neither height nor depth,” v 39); nothing “in all creation.” Nothing! Nothing can separate us from God's love! Why? Because God loves us simply because of his choice, not because of anything in us (which may change), nor anything around us (which may change). He loves us because he loves us.”

Friends, while our love is fickle and fallible, Christ’s love is inseverable and inseparable. His love is steadfast and sturdy. May we hear with wide ears of faith this promise accompanied by Jesus’ promise spoken over His own in John 10:28-29: “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.” No one. Nothing. Did you hear this? No one. No… One… Let it sink in; let it speak to your fearful heart! Let it calm the storms of your worried mind and in turn birth an ocean of praise in response! You can bank on this: God’s love for you is resolved and resilient.
