Revelation 21:5-6 - The Verses Project

Bible Revelation 21:5-6

Posted January 18, 2016

And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.

It often feels like the earth is spinning out of control, doesn’t it? When we turn on the news, we see chaos and fear. It doesn’t feel like things are being made new at all! But this passage does much to reassure us that God is and always has been in complete control of human history. He has never once felt a pang of panic or fear over the happenings of the world. These trustworthy & true words in Revelation were graciously recorded and preserved for our comfort – so we can know and remember that God’s plan has already been set in motion, and that the fulfillment of it is guaranteed.

It Is Done!

These words closely echo the cry of Jesus in John 19:30, when He cried out from the cross, “It is finished!” right before He took His last breath. Jesus knew that His life & death would accomplish God’s great mission: to rescue His people from the dominion of darkness. His final breath set the dominoes in motion, leading up to the final future victory when the New Heavens and New Earth will be ushered in (Rev. 21:1). On the cross Jesus said, “I thirst” (Jn 19:28). On the throne Jesus declares the thirsty will drink freely of the water of LIFE without end. We can see that His work on the cross was the cornerstone, and His final heavenly kingdom will be the capstone that completes the building. The blueprints have always been securely in His hand!

The Beginning & The End

Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. Jesus is the beginning of all, by whom all things were made, and He is the end of all things, before whom all things will bow (Jn. 1:3, Rom. 14:11). Not a moment of time has existed apart from Him. What comfort! In these verses we see our victorious King, who has always been and who will always be, bringing His kingdom of order out of a world of chaos. This is our great hope! This is the destiny of every single believer. Eternal life is offered, free of payment, to all who will run to God. It is free because He has already paid the price for us. We bring nothing in our hands. When we drink, we will be completely and deeply satisfied in Him, and our hearts will no longer thirst. If these words are trustworthy & true, what is the proper response? Unshakeable trust! Grateful worship! Complete dependence! He is in control, and we don’t need to live in fear any longer. It is done! All things are in place. He is on the throne, and His is the final, finishing word.
