Psalms 91:5-6 - The Verses Project

Bible Psalms 91:5-6

Posted July 23, 2012

5 You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day,6 nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

We're on to our third installment (of seven) as we journey to memorize all of Psalm 91! Please continue to invite friends to join us...

As we read through this psalm, we see it isn't oblivious to life's difficulty, but acknowledges that trouble will come our way! While it promises refuge for those who put their trust in God, the battles we fight are still many and strong. We are never promised that the terrors won't still be there, or that the arrows won't continue to fly (in fact, Ephesians 6 teaches that Satan continues to fire them our way!). You may still be stalked by the pestilence (disease), and destruction and devastation might be after you. However, what it does promise is that we no longer need to fear those things that we once did!

How do we find freedom from this fear? Start by remembering & walking in two powerful truths:

1) God is stronger. We can fight this fear with a greater, more healthy fear: the fear of the Lord. We're not talking about a "terrified" fear anymore, but rather a fear that involves reverence for God, a hatred of sin, and in turn, an obedience of Him. He is stronger than the night terror and his faithfulness is a shield & buckler as the arrows fly. Put your trust & your fear in him and not man or anything else! He is the Most High, the Almighty. Anything else is beneath Him! Put your confidence in Christ, who died for you and your sins, and now sits at the right hand of God in resurrection power.

2) God is better. We can fight this fear with a greater, superior pleasure. Those things we fear can only take so much from us: physical pleasure, health, finances, our reputation, etc. God, however, brings us greater and longer lasting joy than anything we might find joy in on this earth. Whatever you can think of, God is better. We can stare at terror, arrows, pestilence, and destruction, and say, "Take all those things you're threatening to take from me, but I have one thing you can't take away from me: God Himself. My heart and flesh may fail, but God will be my strength and my portion forever!"
