11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. 12 On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.
Welcome to the 6th installment of Psalm 91! After this week, we only have one set of verses left... As always, a quick definition is in store. An adder is a venomous snake (generally associated with the viper).
A few things stood out in these verses:
1) This was the verse that Satan tempted Jesus with in Matthew 4:6. This is a strong reminder to be careful with how we "use" Scripture. We mustn't take it out of its context to mean whatever best serves our selfish purposes, but rather allow God to teach us its meaning within its original context.
2) Not only is the Most High watching over you, but His angels are commanded to guard you! Isn't that amazing? God knows the evils lurking (demons & fallen angels included), and is committed to carrying on to completion the work He started in you. While mysterious, God's angels are real and present with us to carry out His commands.
3) Derek Kidner commented that this passage portrays Christians not as mere survivors, but also as victors! While we may not always feel this truth, it's a truth that eventually will come true in Christ's return and victory over death, sin, & evil. Wrongs will be made right, and the bent will be straightened. We are "more than conquerors" in Christ...
4) You can't read this imagery and not think back to Genesis 3:15. God was promising that one was coming who would bruise the head of the serpent (ie defeat of Satan). Christ broke the back of Satan through his death & resurrection, gives us his authority to walk in today over Satan, and will one day decisively cast him into the lake of fire. If we are in Christ, we can walk in Christ's authority and trample Satan underfoot! This week's song was contributed by Ryan Delmore (http://www.ryandelmore.com/), who is a worship leader & singer/songwriter that we love & respect out of the Central Coast, California. You can listen to his last couple records here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/ties-of-kinship/id520235226 and http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/spirit-water-blood/id402457892. The song was recorded at Clarke Lane Studios, engineered, mixed, & mastered by Darren Clarke (http://clarkelanemusic.com/). Cameron Ingalls (http://cameroningalls.com/) filmed Ryan & band while they recorded the song and posted the video below.
Scott Allen Hill (http://www.scottallenhill.com/) of FoundryCo (http://foundrycollective.com/) created the artwork, utilizing the image of a fallen lion. While typically lions are pictured as the "king of the animals", strong and victorious, in this case the verse promises that God will ultimately triumph over the beasts (lion & serpent) that attack us. There are not only iPad & iPhone images, but also 5 desktop sizes you can download (pick the one that fits your desktop dimensions). Remember that we create these images with the intent of helping you to memorize & meditate on the verses.
